He was particularly known for his interpretations of British music, but was also highly regarded for his performances of the works of Beethoven, Brahms, Elgar, Wagner and Vaughan Williams.

The album features the London Philharmonic Orchestra, which was founded in 1932 and has since become one of the most internationally respected orchestras. The orchestra has had many esteemed conductors over the years, including Sir Adrian Boult, who was its principal conductor from 1950 to 1957.
