Steamhammer
Mountains
Rare & Collectible Vinyl Records

1975 reissue in textured cover. Mountains, stands as a significant entry in the early progressive rock and blues-rock canon. Often lauded as their creative peak, the record showcases a more ambitious and intricate sound compared to their earlier, more straightforward blues offerings. Frontman Kieran White's distinctive vocals, coupled with Martin Pugh's fluid, often improvisational guitar work, define much of its sonic landscape. The band masterfully blends extended instrumental passages with a raw, bluesy core, creating an atmospheric yet powerful listening experience that resonates with fans of vintage hard rock and psychedelic exploration. Critics from sources like AllMusic have consistently praised the album for its instrumental prowess and innovative spirit.

From the driving rhythms and harmonica-laden blues of tracks like "Riding on the L&M" to the sprawling, more exploratory title track, Mountains demonstrates Steamhammer's versatility and willingness to push genre boundaries. The album's rich tapestry of sounds, incorporating elements of jazz, folk, and heavy rock, cemented its reputation as a cult classic. Its sophisticated arrangements and dynamic shifts marked a clear evolution for the group, distinguishing them in a crowded field of late '60s/early '70s rock acts.
