Herb Alpert Presents Pete Jolly
Sealed 1968 Original. "Herb Alpert, Then At The Crest Of His Fabulously Successful Roll With The Tijuana Brass, Tried To Give Unsung L.A. Hero Pete Jolly — Then Toiling In The Studios — Some High-Profile Exposure-By-Association On A Trio Of Albums For His Own Label, A&M. On Their First Try, Alpert And Jolly Serve Up An Appealing Mix Of Swinging Quartet Jazz And Period Instrumental Pop Tastefully Orchestrated By Marty Paich, Very Much Within The Parameters Of A&M's Enlightened Middle-Of-The-Road Direction In Its Early Years. Some Soft Rock-Accented Tracks Are Clearly Aimed At Airplay (Leroy Anderson's "Serenata," Dori Caymmi's "Like A Lover"), While Other Paich Orchestrations Are A Bit Tougher And More Challenging ("For Carl"), And Neal Hefti's "Lonely Girl" Gets An Especially Lively And Erudite Workout. Yet Whether Embroidering The Melody Or Taking Off With Drummer Earl Palmer, Bassist Chuck Berghofer And Guitarist John Pisano (On Loan From The TJB), Jolly Is Marvelously Inventive And A Hard-Swinging Pianist At All Times. This LP Is A Most Attractive Marriage Between Art And Commerce — Something Alpert Was, And Remains, Very Good At." Richard Ginell, AMG.
