Woods, Phil

Live From New York
Sealed 1982 Original Recorded Live At The Village Vanguard. Small Cut Corner. "In October 1982, the Phil Woods Quartet (comprised of the leader on alto, pianist Hal Galper, bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin) performed two albums at the Village Vanguard on consecutive nights for two different labels (Palo Alto and Antilles). The former set, which was released a couple years later to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the band, has mostly lengthy renditions of the five songs (only one of which is under nine minutes in length). Woods is particularly inspired on John Carisi's "Springsville," Bill Evans' "Very Early" and Bud Powell's memorable "Webb City." Virtually all of the many recordings by Woods' quartet and quintets are recommended to straight-ahead jazz fans, and this one is no exception." Scott Yanow, AMG.
