Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing
1982 Six-Track Odds & Sods EP. This remix mini-album followed their breakthrough debut, "Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret." Rather than a conventional studio album, it presents re-imaginings of previous tracks and introduces new influences, notably reflecting the club and dance scene’s growing importance in the early 1980s. The album’s most significant addition is their cover of Judy Street’s "What!," which became a notable UK hit and demonstrated Soft Cell's affinity for Northern Soul and their ability to reinterpret diverse genres through a synth-pop lens. Producer Mike Thorne’s involvement again ensured the group’s signature electronic textures remained prominent, all while inviting a more groove-oriented, dance-floor-friendly approach. Historically, "Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing" occupies a unique position in Soft Cell’s catalog, bridging the moody, narrative-driven synth-pop of their debut and the more experimental directions that followed. It also arrived during a period when remix albums were not yet the industry norm, marking Soft Cell as early adopters of the trend to rework and extend tracks for club play.
