Modern Jazz Quartet
Pyramid
1962 Blue & Green Label Stereo 2nd Press In Shrink. The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was formed in 1952 and was made up of John Lewis on piano, Milt Jackson on vibraphone, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums. "Pyramid" was the 10th studio album by the MJQ and was recorded in August 1959 in New York City. The album features a mix of original compositions by John Lewis, as well as covers of songs by other jazz musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk. The title track, "Pyramid," was inspired by Egyptian architecture and features a complex, polyrhythmic structure that was characteristic of the MJQ's style. The album also includes the popular jazz standard "It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," which was originally written by Duke Ellington.
