1976 Original. Released in 1976, Boz Scaggs’ Silk Degrees marked a defining moment both in his career and in the soundscape of 1970s pop and blue-eyed soul. Prior to Silk Degrees, Scaggs had experienced modest success as a solo artist after his tenure with the Steve Miller Band, but this album propelled him to mainstream fame. Produced by Joe Wissert and recorded at Hollywood’s Davlen Sound Studios, the album features a blend of pop, soul, R&B, and soft rock, largely characterized by polished musicianship and smooth production. Notably, the backing band for Silk Degrees included future members of Toto—David Paich, Jeff Porcaro, and David Hungate—who contributed to the album’s refined yet soulful sound.
