Vaughan Williams
Sinfonia Antartica
Sealed, Hard To Find 1985 Original Pressed On Teldec Virgin Vinyl. Bernard Haitink Conducting The London Philharmonic Orchestra With Sheila Armstrong, Soprano. The Performance Here Is By The London Philharmonic Orchestra And LPO Chorus, With Soprano Sheila Armstrong. Bernard Haitink Conducts A Performance That Has Clarity And Poise On Its Side. The Composer Was Writing A Monument And Included A Wind Machine To The Big Instrumental Body. Haitink Has Sorted Out The Complexities And Arranged The Music In An Orderly Way, And His Orchestra Meets His Demands Alertly. The Old Recording By Sir Adrian Boult, With Its Profound Regard For The Composer's Very English Musical Roots, Remains Important, But This Recording Honors The Score With Its Thoughtful Playing, And Engineering That Brings Out Many Of The Shadings Imbedded In The Score. The Orchestra Probes Widely In The Field Of Sound And Emotional Response, Enough To Give Intentionally Pictorial Music A Good Name.
