The album marked a departure from Dylan's previous works as it was heavily influenced by his newfound Christian faith. The record's sound was heavily influenced by gospel and blues music and featured a full backing band. It was produced by Jerry Wexler and Barry Beckett, who were known for their work with artists such as Aretha Franklin and Wilson Pickett.
The album received mixed reviews from critics, with some praising Dylan's newfound spiritual direction and others criticizing the heavy-handed lyrics and lack of the usual poetic imagery. Despite the mixed reception, the album was commercially successful, reaching No. 3 on the US Billboard 200 chart and earning a gold certification from the RIAA.
