Strictly Live In '85
Sealed And Ridiculously Hard To Find 1990 Original With Custom Inner. Tiny CC. “Consisting Of Tapes Recorded Live Over Two Nights In March Of 1985 At The Belly Up Tavern In Soldano Beach, California, This Captures James Harman And One Of His Best Bands In Full Cry, Warts And All. Kicking Off With A James Brown-Announcer-On-Acid Introduction From Fellow Harp Maestro John "Juke" Logan, Harman And The Boys Kick Hard And Heavy Through Half A Dozen Of His Better-Known Numbers, Including An Earlier And Electric Version Of "Goatman Holler." The Guitar Interplay Between Hollywood Fats And Kid Ramos Is Textbook In Its Accuracy And Passion, And The Rocksteady Rhythm Section Of Stephen Hodges On Drums And William Campbell Keeps Things Totally In Groove Territory Every Beat Of The Way. In This Live Setting, Things Get Brought Down And Stretched Out, But Never Unnecessarily So, And Even The Almost Nine-Minute Shuffle "You're Gone" Is Worth Every Second The Boys Put Into It. Although Nowhere As Wiseass Or Beatnik-Cool As His Current Persona, Harman Nonetheless Blows With Chops Galore, And His Vocals (And Asides To The Crowd Between Songs) Here Seem To Come With Their Own Built-In Smirk. Worth More Than A Listen Or Two Just For The Late Hollywood Fats' Stellar Solo Work, And The Rarity Of Being A Live Album That Actually Rocks Without Having To Rely On Shop-Worn Cover Material. Certainly One Of Harman's Best Efforts, And Very Deserving Of A Much Wider Hearing.” – Cub Koda, All Music Guide
