Inside surface of the cover is black Released in October 1973, "Time Fades Away" is Neil Young’s first live album, capturing performances from his 1973 tour with backing band The Stray Gators. Unlike a typical live set, this record features entirely new material, none of which appeared on previous studio albums at the time. The tour—and the album—are notorious for their raw, unvarnished sound, partly due to the use of an experimental direct-to-disc recording technique that resulted in a gritty, sometimes abrasive ambiance. The band’s lineup, including Ben Keith on pedal steel, Jack Nitzsche on piano, Tim Drummond on bass, and Johnny Barbata on drums, faced interpersonal and technical challenges, reflecting the turbulent energy embedded in these performances. Songs like "Journey Through the Past" and "Don't Be Denied" exemplify Young’s candid songwriting during a period marked by personal and professional upheaval, following the tragic deaths of fellow musicians Danny Whitten and Bruce Berry. "Time Fades Away" remained out of print on vinyl for decades, contributing to its mystique among collectors and fans; it was not officially reissued on the format until Record Store Day 2014.
